Wolfgang Joop was born on 28th of November in 1944 in Potsdam. He was the Inventor of fashion and the cosmetic firm Joop and is one of the most successful and most famous German people in fashion including Karl Lagerfeld and Jil Sander.
After he finished College at Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Braunschweig, Joop began a Studium as Commercial Psychologist because of his father. But he broke up and worked as Restaurator and was very interested in Art. In 1968 he began a Studium of Art, which he also did not finish. Until then his life wasn´t really successful.
Joop´s career finally began in 1970, when he entered a Fashion-Contest with his wife Karin from the German Magazine Constanze. He won all the best three prices. Thereupon he became fashion editorial Journalist at the German Women Magazine called “Neue Mode”. He quit this job in 1971, because he wanted to be more independent, so that he started freelancing as journalist and designer.
Joop scored his international breakthrough already seven years later, he introduced his first own Fur-Collection, which was awarded with the “Prussian Designer Award” from the New York Times. After that in Spring 1982 he introduced his first Prêt-a-porter Women-collection, following his first Men-Collection in 1985. Two years later, he presented his first Parfume-Collection, which finally made his name to a Trademark. He formed the famous Logo with the complete capitalization to symbolise the energy and an exclamation. From now on under that name you could acquire Clothing, Shoes, Jewelry, Glasses and Perfume. “JOOP” was now not just a designer-label any longer, it was a Lifestyle-Trademark, which ”only” gave schemes and licenses, but does not allow production.
Privates: In 1970 Wolfgang Joop married Karin Benatzky, who was Art-student, now divorced. He has two daughters. One of them, Jette Joop is famous because of her Fashion, Jewely-Design and Interior Design, too. She is really creativ in tiling and bathes. Actually you can buy Houses created by Jette Joop.
